32P-Chromic Phosphate

32P-Chromic Phosphate

32P-Chromic Phosphate is a radiopharmaceutical compound that has been used in the treatment of various medical conditions, particularly in the field of nuclear medicine. This radiopharmaceutical consists of the radioisotope phosphorus-32 (32P) bound to chromic phosphate, a compound that facilitates the delivery of the radioactive phosphorus to target tissues within the body.

Phosphorus-32 is a beta-emitting radioisotope that decays by emitting beta particles, which have the ability to penetrate tissues and deliver localized radiation therapy to targeted areas. This property makes 32P-Chromic Phosphate a valuable tool in the treatment of certain medical conditions, such as certain types of cancer and bone disorders.

One of the key applications of 32P-Chromic Phosphate is in the treatment of bone metastases, where the radioactive phosphorus can be used to selectively target and destroy cancer cells that have spread to the bones. By delivering targeted radiation therapy to these metastatic lesions, 32P-Chromic Phosphate can help alleviate pain, reduce tumor burden, and improve quality of life for patients with bone metastases.

Overall, 32P-Chromic Phosphate represents a powerful tool in the arsenal of nuclear medicine for the treatment of various medical conditions, offering targeted and effective radiation therapy to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

Description

32P-Colloidal Chromic Phosphate is a radiotherapeutic used for intracavital administration of beta emitters for solid tumors, radiosynovectomy or cystic brain tumors.

Clinical applications

32P is a pure β-emitting colloidal, non-absorbable radiopharmaceutical administered into body cavities such as the pleural or peritoneal spaces to control malignant effusions. Earlier publications showed some interest in cystic brain tumors (craniopharyngioma or astrocytoma) in combination with external radiotherapy.

In some countries it was used in radiosynovectomy (back to 1982) before it was replaced by 169Er, 186Re or 90Y. Doses used in joints cover the range 0.3 mCi (fingers) to 6 mCi (knees).

Availability

32P-Colloidal Chromic Phosphate is sold by Mallinckrodt (Curium) under the name Phosphocol P-32. The drug is available at other places under the names Chromphosphotope or Chrom Phosphate P-32. The USA 2020 average sale’s price is  US$ 330.

Competition

32P Sodium phosphate could be used for the same indication, but the type of formulation and the size of particles play an important role. Chromic phosphate’s applications are limited to radiosynovectomy, bone pain palliation and treatment of Polycythemia Vera, while Chromic Phosphate is mainly used for tumor intracavital administration.

Comments

This product has been used for more than 50 years and is not in the top list of nuclear physicians anymore, but still available.
